I-70 through Colorado experienced bumper-to-bumper traffic and delays at the Eisenhower tunnel over the Independence Day holiday weekend, and officials expect more of the same the weekend of July 17-18 and the first few weekends in August.

Officials hope the gridlock will inspire residents to approve a $122 million funding measure that comes up for a vote in November. The money would go toward improvements along I-70 over the next five years.
Highway officials had to close the Eisenhower tunnel four times Monday afternoon as nearly 45,000 vehicles went through the tunnel. Closings were necessary because a standstill inside could turn into a disaster in the case of a fire or other emergency.
Options for improving I-70 could include adding lanes or building a light rail line from the Denver airport to Eagle County Airport near Vail.
