South Carolina has joined Missouri and Arkansas in considering legislation that would target truckers with higher fines for speeding.

The bill, currently under debate in the state legislature, calls for fines as high as $1,000 for speeding by a CDL holder and is endorsed by the South Carolina Trucking Assn.
“We want to send the message loud and clear that professional drivers who speed will not be defended or tolerated,” says Phil Byrd with the association. “We firmly believe that fines for excessive speeds should be substantially increased for all drivers, but if the legislature has no stomach for it, we are willing to stand for stronger standards for commercial drivers.”
The association also has agreed to cooperate with the state Department of Transportation on a test project that would restrict trucks to the two right lanes of certain three-lane segments of I-85 in Greenville and Spartanburg counties.
