After a difficult financial year, FieldWorks is moving to a more service-oriented approach, reports the Minneapolis/St. Paul CityBusiness journal. The company will still turn out its “ruggedized” laptop computers, focusing on a few vertical markets such as transportation, along with military/law enforcement and utilities.
An example of the new business model is FieldWorks’ recent deal with Ryder Transportation Systems. FieldWorks contacted the manufacturers of the various pats of Ryder trucks and got the diagnostic software for each one. All the different software will be loaded on 751 laptops included in the deal and linked together.
Last year, FieldWorks was plagued with reliability issues with its 5000 series laptops. The line was discontinued and the 5000 Series II was introduced.
