Nov. 5 – The Teamsters rerun election got under way Monday as ballots were mailed to the union’s 1.4 million members.
The Teamsters rank and file have one month to choose between James P. Hoffa, son of the notorious union boss Jimmy Hoffa, or Tom Leedham, head of the union’s warehouse division.
The government ordered new elections after Teamsters President Ron Carey was found to have benefited from an illegal fund-raising scheme during the 1996 election. The rerun has been delayed several times because union officials and the government supervisors disagreed about who should pay for it.
