Oct. 12 – More than 40 years after they worked for Service Trucking Co. in Federalsburg, MD, more than 330 former employees and spouses came together for an Old-Time Truckers Reunion Sunday, Sept. 27, in Seaford, DE.
Truckers came from as far away as Florida and Oklahoma. Senior citizens shared addresses, phone numbers and e-mails. A huge display featured pictures, old uniforms, advertising memorabilia and model trucks.
The reunion honored their employer, Gil Banning, who died 20 years ago. Banning began trucking at age 18 in 1931. By 1942, he had founded and was president of Service Trucking. By the 1950s, the company had more than 500 pieces of equipment and 300 employees at 15 terminals in 10 states.
The event was the vision of former employee Asbury Evans, who did not live to see its completion. Ed Banning, one of Gilbert’s six children and head of Trinity Transport in Bridgeville, DE, continued plans for the reunion after Evans’ death.
