Sept. 16 – The Ohio Highway Patrol is using 12 planes and two helicopters to help fight road rage.
After more than a year in operation, Operation Triad — Targeting Reckless, Intimidating and Aggressive Drivers — has issued more than 1,448 citations for aggressive driving. The most common offense was speeding, followed by following too close, improper lane changes and failing to yield. Police search for anything aggressive — motorists crossing four lanes of traffic all at once, cutting off other drivers, driving left of center or driving on the berm and median.
The American Automobile Assn. has tracked more than 10,000 cases of road rage nationally, including 218 that were fatal, between 1990 and 1995, according to The Cincinnati Enquirer. Ohio has contributed to those numbers. For instance, in Cincinnati, a pregnant woman lost her unborn child when an angry motorist caused her to veer off the side of the road and into the back of a tractor-trailer that was parked in the berm.
