FMCSA Not Doing Enough to Keep Unsafe Operators Off Highways, NTSB Says

In the wake of its investigation of a crash caused by a fatigued motorcoach driver, the National Transportation Safety Board reiterated its call for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to change its motor carrier safety rating system.

DOT Changing Drug Testing to Address Opioid Abuse Epidemic

The Department of Transportation plans to add four prescription opioids – hydrocodone, hydromorphone, oxymorphone and oxycodone – to the existing DOT drug-testing panel for screening truck drivers and other "safety-sensitive" transportation workers. This final rule is to take effect on Jan. 1.

Overall Traffic Deaths Decline, Truck-Involved Fatalities Edge Higher

Truck drivers should not use hands-free phones while driving, says the National Transportation Safety Board. The Board’s recommendation was one of several changes it wants the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to make in the wake of a 2013 truck-train crash that caused a derailment, hazmat fire and explosion.

FMCSA Installs DataQs Fix

Carriers and drivers can now get a violation removed from their CSA scores if a court has dismissed it. Under a system that went live August 23, carriers and drivers can submit proof of dismissal or a not-guilty finding through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s DataQs portal.
