Citing Low Medical Examiner Numbers, OOIDA Calls for Registry Delay

The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association has requested that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration extend the registration deadline for certified medical examiners, claiming there is a shortage of medical examiners that have been accepted into the new national registry.

Carriers Worried but FMCSA Says It’s on Target for Certified Medical Examiners

Starting May 21 all driver medical exams have to be done by an examiner who is certified to the new National Registry standards. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration believes that by May 21 there will be enough examiners certified to handle the work, but trucking interests are not so sure.

NIOSH Study Points to Significant Health Risks for Long-Haul Drivers

Long-haul drivers are plagued by significant health risks, according to a new study by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health. Almost 70% of these drivers are obese, compared to 31% of other workers, and the prevalence of morbid obesity is twice as high, 17% versus 7%.

TCA Expands Health Competition’s Scope, Renames it 'Long-Haul Weight Loss Showdown'

After sponsoring three highly successful weight-loss challenges within the trucking industry, with more than 7,600 pounds lost, the Truckload Carriers Association has now added a 30-week maintenance component. Combined with the initial 10 weeks of weight loss, the entire program will last for 10 months in 2014, and will be called the “Long-Haul Weight Loss Showdown.”

Sleep Apnea CPAP Battery Test Now Underway at Major Fleet, TMC Says

PITTSBURGH -- A field test of battery-powered CPAP devices to combat sleep apnea among drivers is now underway with the help of three suppliers and a major truckload fleet, according to a report at a task force meeting of the Technology & Maintenance Council of the American Trucking Associations.

Medical Services Added To Bordentown Petro

TravelCenters of America has opened a medical clinic at the Petro Stopping Center, located off I-295, Exit 57, in Bordentown, N.J. This is the first medical clinic offering in the state for the chain and its 18th location nationwide offering medical services.

Ironman Triathlete Prime Driver Publishes Book

Siphiwe Baleka, a former lease operator with Prime Inc., gave new meaning to the phrase “Driver Health and Fitness.” In April 2012, right after completing a three-year lease with Prime, Baleka competed in the Ironman South Africa triathlon, finishing the 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and 26.2 mile run in 11 hours 59 minutes and 14 seconds.
