The Truckload Carriers Assn. has assumed oversight and management of the North American Transportation Management Institute from the American Trucking Associations.

The university-accredited certification program for fleet safety, maintenance and driver training professionals has been affiliated with ATA since 1993. ATA and the NATMI's Advisory Board agreed earlier this year to transfer administration responsibility to TCA because of TCA's focus on and experience in industry training and education.
"Since our decision to exit the training business," said David Barefoot, ATA senior vice president and chief operating officer, "NATMI, TCA and ATA have worked together to make the transition of NATMI to TCA complete and seamless." When it restructured last year, ATA decided to focus on lobbying and advocacy.
NATMI, formerly known as the National Committee for Motor Fleet Supervisor Training and Certification, has trained and certified transportation professionals since 1944. It will continue to operate as an independent organization, serving all sectors of the fleet industry, not just truckload, including for-hire and private motor carriers, passenger carriers and government fleets, truckload and less-than-truckload. TCA President Bob Hirsch characterized TCA's role as a fiduciary or trustee.
