Newport Communications is temporarily taking over public relations and promotional duties for the Trucker Buddy program while new management is sought.

In March, the Trucker Buddy board of directors decided not to renew the contract of public relations agency Norcom and Norcom's Tom Wetzel, who had been serving as president of the charitable organization while Norcom handled promotional duties. The decision was made after questions were raised about the amount of money being spent for the services of Wetzel and his firm.
Newport Communications has assumed responsibility for public and media relations, fleet and driver and sponsor promotions and newsletter production on a temporary basis. Trucker Buddy will put out a call for management proposals within the next few days, and they will be considered at the next board meeting at the Great American Truck Show in Dallas in September. Until that time, Newport Features Editor Deborah Whistler, a Trucker Buddy board member, will be the official spokesperson for Trucker Buddy. Newport's role will also be reviewed by the board at that time.
Trucker Buddy is a pen-pal program that matches trucker volunteers with elementary school classes. For more information, call 1-800-MY-BUDDY or visit http://www.truckerbuddy.org.
