Williams Travel Centers (formerly Mapco Express) wants to build a new truckstop on I-10 in Biloxi, MS, but local residents want the county to deny the company a construction permit.
According to published reports, residents of the Holly Bluff Estates Property Owners Assn. want Harrison County officials to deny the permit unless Williams agrees to provide a 160-foot buffer zone and sound wall to keep the noise and smell away from their homes to the north of the proposed site. The site is on the northeast corner of I-10 and Cedar Lake Road just outside the Biloxi city limits.
County officials say Williams has offered to provide the buffer zone, but not the sound wall.
The county has little say-so because the county has no zoning laws. Voters turned down a plan that would have established zoning regulations in 1990.
The property owners say if no agreement can be reached, they may try to block construction through court action.
