Sales of heavy trucks broke the record in 1998, although they didn’t quite reach some predictions.
The final numbers for Class 8 trucks sold in the United States last year totaled 209,483. That beat 1997 sales by nearly 31,000 trucks and broke the previous record, set in 1995, by more than 8,000.
Factors leading to the strong sales include a strong economy and the three- to four-year trade-in cycle of many large truckload carriers who bought trucks in 1994 and 1995. Some predictions last spring ran as high as 220,000. Quite a few orders were cancelled late in the year as the Asian economic situation prompted concerns about a global recession.
