A shortage of pilots? Really?

A shortage of pilots? Really? At least one influential aviation figure begs to differ. It's no mystery why young people don't want to be truck drivers

November 5, 2012

A driver could face felony charges in Washington State for not cleaning zebra mussels off a boat he was hauling. Felony charges? How many other "civilians" can land in that kind of hot water for failing to be 100% diligent 100% of the time

What happened to brotherhood?

Tractor-trailers parked in a designated LCV Only parking area on Ontario's Hwy 401 near Kingston, Ont.

It's not enough that drivers need to watch out for downright lousy car drivers, overly enthusiastic creeper-cops and dispatchers that don't know the meaning of 'tomorrow,' they also need to be on guard for the sins of their brothers and sisters.

Crash Prevention? Sorry, not our job.

What does this disc brake pad say to you? I found it in a motel parking lot frequented by tour buses that travel the mountainous roads in the region.

With a potential calamity hanging in the balance, why didn't law enforcement in this small Canadian tourist town take any action to prevent it, or at least investigate what I had called to tell them?

What's a Good Driver?

December 20, 2011

Everybody wants good truck drivers these days. Funny thing though, the recruiting ads are usually desperately short on specifics. So what is a good driver? Let's ask a few of the many masters that drivers serve in the course of their duties

Beware motorcycle wannabes with bicycle brains

Motorcycle or bicycle: can you tell the difference?

October 31, 2011

They look like motorcycles, but they're regulated like bicycles. They have tiny motors supposedly incapable of propelling them faster than 20 mph. They require no special license, no special operator training, and no insurance. These things are accidents looking for a place to happen

Three Cheers and a Tiger for the Convoy Drivers

October 16, 2011

There's something in a convoy of trucks that seems to stir a driver's imagination. It's being a part of something. A cog in something turning, as the Woodstock song goes. The convoys I'm referring to are the various fund-raising convoys that take place around North America each fall

Michigan's retread fee is a really dumb idea

Retreading is already one of the most efficient forms of recycling. Why tax it further? Photo by Jim Park.

October 9, 2011

Late last week, on an otherwise hum-drum news day, a notice came in indicating Michigan was contemplating a $5 environmental levy on retreaded tires. That livened up the newsroom. Placing a surcharge on what has to be recycling's posterchild product is silly enough, but wait until you hear why

Hot on the heels of my most recent blog about the truck crash on the Pennsylvania rest area on-ramp, comes this tale of a fellow riding an electric wheelchair along the breakdown lane of I-95 in Connecticut
