How to Minimize Unauthorized Use of Corporate Assets

February 24, 2018

A growing number of employees are using their company vehicles as a tool to generate supplemental personal income for themselves. Don't Underutilize the Expertise of Your Suppliers

December 12, 2017

For many managers responsible for vehicle operations, fleet management is often one of several job responsibilities. These managers acknowledge that it is difficult to stay on top of changes in vehicle design, powertrains, onboard safety technology, telematics capabilities, and regulatory changes that impact fleet operations. Despite this recognition, a common mistake made by many of these managers is underutilizing the subject-matter expertise of current and/or prospective suppliers.

Industry Dialogue Needed to Ensure Regulations Don’t Impede Advances in Fleet Technology

December 22, 2015

A watershed moment occurred July 21, 2015, with the introduction of a first-of-its-kind bill, the Security and Privacy in Your Car Act. It directs NHTSA to conduct a rulemaking to issue vehicle cybersecurity regulations against unauthorized access to electronic controls or driving data. There are number of stakeholders in the “OBD ecosystem.” In addition to government regulators and auto OEMs, important OBD stakeholders include fleet managers, aftermarket suppliers, and industry associations.

Is the Fleet Industry Grossly Under-Estimating Personal Use Miles of Company-Provided Vehicles

October 16, 2013

If you asked fleet managers what the industry average is for personal use of company vehicles, most would say it is approximately 15-18 percent. But, is it? Most of us will agree that some drivers fudge their personal-use mileage, but no one knows by how much. There is a growing suspicion that personal-use mileage is far greater — perhaps substantially greater — than what the industry accepts as conventional wisdom.

No Silver Bullet to Fleet Emission Reductions

November 8, 2012

Vehicle fleets are key contributors to a company’s overall greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, but they do offer a way to make quick emissions reductions. Since most companies replace approximately one-third of their fleet vehicles each year, they can structure selectors to favor more fuel-efficient models; however, there is a limit to this strategy. The reality is that there is no single silver bullet to fleet emissions reduction — it requires a multi-pronged approach.

Among the current megatrends that can potentially alter fleet as we know it are a higher interest rate environment, a higher taxation environment, leap-frogging technology, changing fleet demographics, and higher acquisition costs.
