A. Several factors impact oil change intervals. An equipment owner should always start with knowing the equipment manufacturer’s recommendation and their input regarding the use of oil analysis.
To be successful, an oil analysis program must be implemented using a proven process. A proven process means consistently taking oil samples on the recommended schedule, providing complete compartment information, using the proper technique in taking the sample, and learning how to interpret the oil sample results correctly.
If the equipment owner follows these guidelines, oil analysis can be a key part of setting up an optimized oil change interval. Note that the word “optimized” is used instead of extended service interval. Some fleets may already be overextended but do not know to what degree; oil analysis can reveal the weak links in this type of situation.
