PeopleNet is upping the usefulness of its Speed Monitoring product it offers with SpeedGauge, adding exclusive alerts and daily summary enhancements, as well as a partnership to offer insurance discounts.

PeopleNet was the first to partner with SpeedGauge to give fleets insights into which drivers are exceeding posted speed limits. Now it is offering a near-real-time e-mail alert that is sent when a driver triggers a speeding event, so that management can address the issue promptly and knows where and when the event occurred.

In addition, a daily summary lets drivers know how many events they trigger each day.

"This timely information is critical for promoting safe driving habits on a daily basis, as speeding continues to be cited as the number one CSA Unsafe Driver BASIC violation," said Brian McLaughlin, PeopleNet chief operating officer.

PeopleNet is partnering with Brazos Specialty Risk and SpeedGauge to give PeopleNet customers that subscribe to Speed Monitoring a 5% to 10% discount on pay-per-mile auto liability insurance premiums.

The program is available for fleets with 15 or more power units that have PeopleNet's electronic onboard recorders installed in the entire fleet. Monthly premiums are based on actual miles driven as reported by PeopleNet's GPS system.

"We wanted to reward fleets that have taken steps to reduce their safety risk," said Dwight Dowell, Brazos business development director. "Our statistics show significant safety, maintenance, and fuel-related cost benefits for fleets equipped with EOBRs and speed monitoring capability: 70-80% reduction in accidents, 87% reduction in speeding, 89% reduction in aggressive driving, 4% improvement in fuel economy, and 3-5% in maintenance expense."
