Jacobs Vehicle Systems has recently enhanced its engine braking technology to include the capability for engine decompression.

The Jacobs' prototype bleeder/decompression system is a bolt-on device that holds an exhaust valve open during startup to reduce the amount of torque required to start the engine.

This system provides vehicle retarding, reduced wear and tear on the starting system, improved cold starting, reduced battery drain, and less shaking during engine shut-down, Jacobs said.

Decompressing engine cylinders provides increased response under a range of new applications. It can also combine the functionality of a bleeder brake, or it can be used in conjunction with a compression release engine brake.

Jacobs today will present this new system in a poster display at the Directions in Engine Efficiency and Emissions Research conference in Detroit, Mich.
