Peterbilt Motors is offering additional options for the Model 382 highway tractor that turn it into a vocational truck.

Included are higher axle weight capacities, stouter frames, and horsepower and torque ratings suitable for vocational duties.

Originally aimed at regional and short-haul applications, the vocationally oriented 382, in truck and tractor configurations, is now suited for municipal, construction, refuse, fire fighting and emergency applications.

"We have enhanced the already versatile Model 382 with greater component flexibility to make it the ideal vehicle for an expanded range of applications, and customers seeking to achieve an ideal balance of power and weight," said Bill Jackson, Peterbilt general manager and a Paccar vice president.

Newly available components include:

* Cummins ISL9 engine with rear-engine power take-off, REPTO, functionality
* Front axles rated up to 20,000 pounds
* Rear axles rated up to 46,000 pounds
* Frame rail options up to 11-5/8 inches
* The Bendix ESP Stability system for straight-truck applications
* Hendrickson, Reyco and Chalmers rear suspensions.

The Cummins ISL9 diesel has one of the highest power-to-weight ratios in its class, Jackson said. Ratings range from 345 to 380 horsepower with a maximum 1,300 pounds-feet of torque. An improved electronic control module and improved air flow allow the ISL9 to run stronger and with greater responsiveness.

The Model 382 also features a 50-degree wheel cut, allowing drivers to easily maneuver in congested urban environments as well as tight loading and unloading conditions. The sloped hood provides excellent visibility, and an advanced forward-lighting system produces both a broad, bright area up front.

Back-lit gauges, contoured door panels, and rocker switches placed within easy reach are among ergonomically designed features that keep the driver alert, comfortable and productive. An improved HVAC system offers additional air flow while reducing maintenance costs.
