Stratum Technologies of Cleveland has formed a joined venture with Swift Development, West Lafayette, Ind., to develop a high energy-density system consisting of a liquid direct proton fuel cell and a long life, high energy, polymer phosphate lithium-ion battery.

The joint venture, called eVia, will involve a combined system using advanced battery technologies, minimal noble metals and insures maximum safety in vehicle application.

The solution will use the patented Rusek Daroux system. The fuel cell acts as a range extender for the polymer lithium-ion battery, continually recharging the battery using common liquid fuel and oxidant - sodium borohydride and hydrogen peroxide.

The two have developed a cathode that can produce ions without generating oxygen. This enables the use of a liquid oxidant for the first time. The Rusek Daroux system features a clean generation, with no combustion process.
