TORONTO -- Continental Tire gave attendees of Canada's Truck World show a sneak peak at a high-traction drive tire designed for northern climates and extreme winter conditions.

The HDW2 "Scandinavia" is a long-haul tire with 20-ply construction designed for high GVW loads where traction is the main concern.

The HDW2's dense tread geometry and open-shoulder design are engineered to provide greater traction and optimum grip in deep snow and on slick compacted snow. The tread pattern features numerous three-dimensional lateral sipes on the single-direction pattern to provide more gripping edges than traditional drive tires. These sipes also support the tread blocks for improved pulling traction and braking force transfer.

The HDW2 Scandinavia is said to provide 10 percent more grip on snow-covered roads than the previous HDW winter tire, but it's an ideal summer tire too. A two-phase tread pattern developed by Continental allows the tread to wear down to a normal proportion for summer, optimizing rolling resistance and offering better fuel economy than traditional winter tires. An additional 3/32nds of tread depth ensures extended mileage.

The HDW2 Scandinavia's innovative casing technology includes a four-ply triangular belt casing with newly designed steel cord bead, as well as a larger air volume for increased load reserves and additional comfort.

The tire was previewed at Truck World in mid-April, and will be available in the fall.
