Trailer rental and leasing company Xtra Lease will now provide its solar-sustained trailer tracking service on reefers and flatbeds as part of a trailer lease package
. The tracking system, which was introduced on dry vans in 2007, is a web-based interface that allows fleets to monitor trailer dormancy and utilization.

"Our trailer tracking system has provided dry van fleets much greater visibility of their rental and leased trailers," said Bill Franz, CEO and president of Xtra Lease in St. Louis.

The reefer tracking system will be powered by solar power as well as seven-way charging to increase battery life. On the reefer, the solar power unit will be installed on the top edge of the trailer roof, while the units will be installed on the main frame for the flatbed configuration.

Fleets can also track the reefer's operating status from the back office with the one-way reefer monitoring service, which allows customers to check temperature, set-point and any critical alarms. With the one-way monitoring service, fleets can also receive alerts via e-mail when temperatures fall outside of parameters or when the unit generates an alarm.

The one-way monitoring provides information about the reefer unit including mode, fan speed, engine status, operating status, set-point, supply air temperature, engine hours, battery voltage, fuel level and return air temperature.
