Quick Spin: Strong Underpinnings Turn a Medium Into a Heavy

Test Drive: Nissan Titan XD's a Big Leap Forward

The 2016 XD’s exterior styling will be shared with a gasoline-engine XD and with regular Titans. Thanks to lower spring and shock rates than on ¾-ton pickups, an XD rides better over pavement and rough terrain. Photo: Nissan NA

Kenworth's Predictive Cruise Control Looks Ahead to Save Fuel

Predictive cruise control uses terrain mapping and GPS satellite locating to manage the engine and transmission for efficient operation on up- and downgrades. It can be a multi-step procedure, and a driver might or might not notice them all. In rolling terrain, the system can save 1% to 2% in fuel, Kenworth says. Image: Kenworth

Test Drive: Clarke-APG Dual-Fuel Glider

This Columbia sleeper-cab tractor looks new, because most of it is. The powertrain components are remanufactured. Daimler Trucks North America offers glider kits for most Freightliner and some Western Star models. The Wilson hopper-bottom trailer carries crushed lime.

By Tom Berg

From the ground and behind the wheel, you’d think this Freightliner Columbia is brand new. This was obvious on a run out on Interstate 70 in eastern Missouri, pulling a hopper-bottom trailer with a heavy load of granulated lime destined for an animal-food plant in Montgomery City, west of St. Louis. It rode, shifted and ran like new, and was just as comfortable.

Test Drive: KW T800, ISX12 G Paired

By Tom Berg

My drive of the Cummins Wesport ISX12 G was at a mid-July “natural gas summit” hosted by Kenworth at its plant in Chillicothe, Ohio. A half-dozen gas-powered KWs built for different applications were offered to dealers, customers and press reporters for inspection and evaluation. Test Drive: Redesigned Terex

This six-axle FDB6000 for Ohio has three air-suspended lift axles, including a hydraulically operated rear booster that stays down even when the barrel’s empty to reduce chassis bounce.

By Tom Berg

Time is money, and that’s the essence of a front-discharge mixer. It drives right up to where concrete’s needed and, after the driver adds chute extensions, starts offloading. Terex/Advance Mixer in Fort Wayne, Ind., makes rear-discharge drums for mounting on conventional truck chassis, but its heart is in the front-discharge version that it builds all-new and as glider kits.

How does 18 mpg in city driving and 25 on the highway sound for a full-size pickup? That’s what Chrysler’s Ram brand is claiming for some of its 1500 series trucks with a gutsy V-6 gasoline engine mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.
