Test Drive: Clarke-APG Dual-Fuel Glider

This Columbia sleeper-cab tractor looks new, because most of it is. The powertrain components are remanufactured. Daimler Trucks North America offers glider kits for most Freightliner and some Western Star models. The Wilson hopper-bottom trailer carries crushed lime.

From the ground and behind the wheel, you’d think this Freightliner Columbia is brand new. This was obvious on a run out on Interstate 70 in eastern Missouri, pulling a hopper-bottom trailer with a heavy load of granulated lime destined for an animal-food plant in Montgomery City, west of St. Louis. It rode, shifted and ran like new, and was just as comfortable.

Dual-Fuel Gliders: A Way to Get Into Natural Gas for Less Money

Technicians at Penn Commercial Vehicle, a WheelTime member based in Glenmore, Pa., assembled this Coronado daycab demo tractor from a Freightliner glider kit. It has an APG dual-fuel diesel-natural gas system and a Webasto coolant heater.

Dual-fuel glider kits are a relatively new alternative for fleets looking to tap into the benefits of natural gas but at less cost than buying a new, dedicated NG vehicle. A glider is a new truck without some powertrain components. Shops in the field add rebuilt or remanufactured engines, transmissions and rear axles.

The Return of the Glider

Brothers Robert Fitzgerald (standing) and Tommy Fitzgerald Jr. run the enterprise begun by their father, Tommy Sr. In addition to Freightliners and Western Stars, the specialty manufacturer also assembles Peterbilt gliders, like this Model 389, and will soon start on Kenworths.

Glider kits — new trucks and tractors that get rebuilt or remanufactured powertrain components — make up a small percentage of total new-truck purchases, partly because most truck operators know little about them.
