Transport refrigeration system batteries are increasingly being tapped to power additional electronics such as telematics devices, fuel-level sensors, interior trailer lighting and other accessories. But that means batteries can go dead faster than ever. Solar power to the rescue.

Reefer Technology's Becoming More Important

Carrier’s next refrigerant will be carbon dioxide, which is very safe as a cooling compound even if environmental authorities blame CO2 for helping cause Climate Change. Photo: Carrier Transicold

Maintenance and monitoring of temps, real-time tracking of trailers and loads, and clean-burning diesels are already here. More new refrigerants are next.

Auxiliary Power For Work Trucks

Bill Decker’s Miller welder, stashed against a tool box on the front wall of his Wilcox truck body, doubles as an APU and makes 220-volt power to run heavy tools. The genset at his feet produces 110 volts for work lights and smaller tools.

Any work truck with a serious electric welder also has an auxiliary power unit, because the engine-driven device doubles as an APU to run smaller welders, heaters and power tools. And soon, purpose-built APUs will report for duty on work trucks.

Pushing the Telematics Boundaries

A truck’s telematics unit acts as a communications hub, transmitting data from various sensors and systems on the truck. While they send the collected data back to the fleet, they also receive data such as driver instructions, or commands to various devices such as the refrigeration unit.

By Jim Beach

Most large fleets have extensive experience with telematics: GPS location and mobile communications systems that collect data and communicate it back to a server where the fleet can access the information. As the amount and kind of data has increased in recent years, fleets have adopted tools to make sense of all that information and use it across their operation.
