Truck Buying Options: New, Used, Buy or Lease

By Tom Berg

What’ll it be, buddy? New or used? Buy or lease? A salesperson could throw those questions at a prospective buyer and get a combination of answers, and none of them would be absolutely wrong. Because like everything in trucking, “it depends.”

Once Around the Yard: How Salvation Army Won its P&D Battles

Henry Filoteo began buying new trucks to eliminate breakdowns.

By Tom Berg

Over the Christmas holidays, the Salvation Army’s bell ringers raise money to help fund its disaster and human-relief efforts. But considerable dollars also come from its daily pick-ups of donated household and office goods that are delivered to warehouses for sorting and refurbishment. These items are then resold in its Family Stores. For this, SA employs a fleet of medium-duty trucks.

Class 8 Update: Economics Forge Change

Western Star:The flagship from Western Star, a Daimler Trucks brand, is the 4900 with 132-inch cab and hood and long sleeper that’s built for the highway but looks good in town. It and the shorter 4800 are also equipped for vocational work with forward and setback steer axles or twin-steer configurations. Just announced is a 4800SB 8x8 whose setback, driving steer axle is paired with Meritor tri-drive rear axles.

Is trucking in for a transformation? Many believe that long-haul trucking will become less important as regional operations grow and intermodal takes over more long-haul freight, and that will change the type of heavy-duty tractor bought by many trucking companies.

8 Things to Expect on Tomorrow’s Trucks

Freightliner’s Revolution concept truck took some fairly radical approaches to designing a better truck for a regional or hub-and-spoke trucking operation.

By Deborah Lockridge

In some ways, the truck of the future is here today. What would a truck driver from decades ago think if he were suddenly transported from his own time into one of today’s state-of-the-art rigs?

Test Drive: KW T800, ISX12 G Paired

By Tom Berg

My drive of the Cummins Wesport ISX12 G was at a mid-July “natural gas summit” hosted by Kenworth at its plant in Chillicothe, Ohio. A half-dozen gas-powered KWs built for different applications were offered to dealers, customers and press reporters for inspection and evaluation. A few fellows with CDLs, like me, took them for drives, and I had – how shall I say? – a learning experience while in a T800 short-haul daycab tractor pulling a 53-foot van trailer.

Medium-Duty Update: Winners, Losers and Overall Steady Growth

Isuzu:Class 3 NPR Gas (shown) and Class 4 NPR-HD Gas, with a GM-built 6-liter gasoline V-8 and Hydra-matic 6-speed automatic, gets to 20-25% of Isuzu’s sales. Diesel takes 75-80% of sales, but is divided between the 5.2-liter 4HK1-TC inline 4 that powers the Class 4 NPR-HD and the Class 5 NQR, and the 3-liter 4JJ1-TC inline 4 used in the Class 3 NPR Eco-Max cab-chassis and the Reach commercial walk-in van.

By Tom Berg

Depending on who you are in the medium-duty truck business, things are going great, or well, or not so good but looking up. A few builders have picked up market share in Classes 3, 4 and 5 and in Class 6-7. Others have lost some or a lot, but sales continue to climb for most midrange truck makers.

Kenworth T880 Dump Truck

The T880's cab is 8 inches wider and the hood's sculpted lines are smoother than what have been seen for 27 years on T800.

By Tom Berg

Only a couple of days after announcing its new T880 at the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Ky., in March, Kenworth had a couple of trucks for us press people to drive. Equipment Editor Jim Park and I were pleased to be among the scribes who got their hands on the just-minted vocational and regional-haul vehicles.

On the Paccar Twins' Engine

By Steve Sturgess, executive editor

A year ago we predicted that the new Paccar 12.9-liter MX engine used in Europe would be seen here in North America. So it was hardly a big surprise to see the engine in a Peterbilt 389 and a Kenworth T660 at a Dallas truck show in the fall. The MX was incredibly quiet and had plenty of get up and go.
